theNextWave Gallery is pleased to present On Your Mark, a two-person exhibition featuring Brian Dupont and Jon Elliott—two artists whose practices diverge in form yet converge in a shared commitment to the immediacy and truth of mark-making.
Borrowing its title from the charged stillness before a race begins, On Your Mark situates both artists at that threshold moment: poised between intention and action, control and release. The phrase signals anticipation, but also discipline—the honing of instinct into gesture. What follows the mark is movement, and in this exhibition, movement becomes visible as record, residue, and revelation.
Dupont’s work leans into a raw, almost urgent physicality. His marks feel accelerated, as though made in pursuit of something just ahead—each line a sprint, each surface a track bearing the evidence of velocity and impact. There is a sense of compression and release, like a body pushing offthe blocks, where energy is not merely depicted but thoughtfully enacted.
Elliott, by contrast, engages mark-making as a more measured calibration. His gestures unfold with a deliberate pacing, mapping time rather than racing through it. Yet beneath this restraint lies its own intensity: a sustained attention that accumulates force. If Dupont’s work captures the explosive start, Elliott’s charts the endurance of the run—the long-distance negotiation between persistence and doubt.
Together, their works form a dialogue around alignment: not only the literal positioning of a body at the starting line, but the internal alignment required to commit to a mark at all. Each artist reveals, in their own way, that the act of marking is inseparable from risk—the possibility of failure, misstep, or transformation.
On Your Mark invites viewers into this charged interval where everything is about to begin, and where every gesture carries the weight of that beginning.
