Inspired by Venus of Willendorf

Sanford Biggers, “Nesting Venus,” 2022, Maple, 60½ x 13¼ x 13 (153.7 x 33.7 x 33 cm)

Who am I to say why her body-forward form
fits so well into a cupped hand?
4.4 inches unearthed a century ago.
She’s thirty thousand years old!
Bulging breasts and wide belly
promise happy babies. Vagina and
butt cheeks overflow. Stick-like arms
fold over her bosom. Braided circles of hair
frame a face with no features.
Are words as porous as this stone, as light?
Who chiseled this tiny deity?
Did she call herself an artist?
Maybe her legs once existed.
Her smile has to be imagined.
