Description
11 x 14 inches
For nearly two decades, I’ve been creating collages, most 11 by 14 inches or smaller in size. I love creating these “concise” works; for me, they’re like poems or musical etudes. Such compositions “force” me to say what I want to say in a succinct manner; they’re meant to be small, something that draws the viewer in, inviting her or him to enter a microcosmic rather than macrocosmic world. There are two on-going sources of inspiration for these collages. One is music, especially classical compositions and jazz; the other is my great love of the natural sciences. The forms/structures and myriad colors that I find in my study of geology and astronomy are particularly influential. Ultimately, each piece should be seen as a kind of improvisation in which a specific vocabulary of images, shapes, colors, and techniques gets “played with.” The media I use most include crayons, colored pencils, ink, metallic pens, charcoal, graphite pencils, and watercolor pencils. The papers I employ range from Bristol Board and heavy stock drawing paper to watercolor sheets and tracing paper. |
