Verticals of Art, Echoes of the Gaze
Since the dawn of civilization, humanity has observed the sky — the Sun, the Moon, the stars, and the planets — to understand time, nature, and its place in the universe. Each culture has developed its own cosmic language, translating these observations into symbols, cycles, and narratives: constellations and planets in the West, twelve-year cycles and elements in China, sacred calendars among the Maya and Nahua (Aztec) peoples, totems and lunar cycles in other traditions.
These cosmic visions have inspired symbolic and divinatory practices that extend the act of observation, offering pathways for reflection and inner resonance.
Among the Nahua (Aztec) and Maya peoples, the sacred calendar assigns each day a specific symbol and number, linked to deities or cosmic forces influencing an individual’s personality and spiritual mission. These systems show how the observation of celestial bodies and cosmic cycles translates into symbols, myths, and divinatory practices that resonate with the sensibility of each viewer.
In the West, the zodiac signs connect constellations and planets to character traits, elements, and life cycles, each planet embodying a specific energy: Mars for action, Venus for harmony, Jupiter for expansion.
In China, the twelve-year cycle associates animals, elements, and planetary influences, offering a reading of destiny and universal harmony.
Other traditions — Native American, African, or Celtic astrologies — draw inspiration from lunar cycles, celestial movements, and natural forces to connect birth, personality, and destiny.
In this exhibition, each work becomes a vertical mirror. Its rectangular, stable, and structured form guides the gaze upward, evoking ascension, contemplation, and the link between sky and earth. The white frame, pure and luminous, reinforces this celestial and symbolic dimension. Through each piece, the viewer perceives both the artist’s message and their own inner resonance. The artwork acts as a symbolic mirror: it reflects what the viewer finds within it, awakening correspondences with their sensibility, experience, and connection to the represented cultures.
